We Were Surrounded by Man-Eating Sharks

“Unbelievers may well be afraid, for they have an angry God above them, a guilty conscience within them, and a yawning hell beneath them. But we who rest in Jesus are saved from all these by His rich mercy. If we give way to foolish fear, we will dishonor our testimony and lead others to doubt the reality of godliness. We ought to be afraid of being afraid, in case we should grieve the Holy Spirit by foolish distrust.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Two years ago, Deanna and I started a new tradition with our grandkids by taking the four oldest ones on a five-day, four-night trip to northern Kentucky. Last year, we took the same four – Brady, Sadie, Levi, and Dylan – to southern Kentucky to tour Mammoth Cave, Lost River Cave, and Dinosaur World.
On our trip to northern KY, we visited the Ark Encounter, the Creation Museum, the Newport Aquarium, Big Bone Lick State Park, and an alpaca farm. One of the highlights of the Newport Aquarium was the Shark Bridge, a rope bridge that crosses a tank filled with live sharks. There is also a plexiglass tunnel that allows you to walk through an underwater passageway while being surrounded by sharks on all sides.
In some ways, that experience reminded me of Charles Spurgeon’s quote above. We, as believers, are protected from every danger that God doesn’t want us to experience. As far as the ones He allows into our lives, He not only guides us through them, but He also accompanies us every step of the way. It’s like walking on top of – or through – a tank of man-eating sharks and knowing that they can’t bite you!
However, unbelievers don’t have that same “blessed assurance” or that same level of comfort. And so, they have every reason to be scared out of their minds.
Five weeks from now, Lord willing, Deanna and I will be taking all six of our grandkids (yes, Bella and Charlotte are going this time) on a six-day, five-night trip to southeast Georgia. No caves are on our itinerary, but we do plan to visit the Grand Canyon of GA, a couple of planetariums, a zoo, and yes, one aquarium.
I wonder if they will have sharks?
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23”4 (NKJV)
