Twelve Little Words That Pack a BIG Punch

“It’s a good thing we don’t have to play in the shade.” – Bobby Jones, on being told that the temperature on the day of a golf tournament was predicted to be 105 degrees in the shade
Twelve little words, but they speak volumes about Bobby Jones and why he became not only the greatest amateur golfer who ever lived, but also one of the sport’s most widely respected figures.
First, today’s quote reflects Jones’ boundless optimism. Others may be discouraged by the mere thought of playing in the heat and humidity of a summer afternoon – in Georgia, no less – but Bobby Jones just “sucked it up” and made the best of it. Mind over matter, not just athletic talent, is what enabled him to win 13 major championships before retiring from golf at the pinnacle of his career at age 28. His “cup is half-full” approach to life also helped Jones face syringomyelia, a rare and very painful neurological disease that left him wheelchair-bound for the latter part of his life.
Today’s quote also attests to Jones’ sharp wit and unique sense of humor. I can just imagine the startled look on the person’s face when Bobby responded to his dire weather report the way he did.
Those 12 simple words also revealed Jones’ deep determination to rise above not only the elements, but also his circumstances. Simply put, there was no quit in Robert Tyre Jones, Jr.
Finally, Bobby Jones demonstrated a firm refusal to make excuses. Not once did he agree with – or allow himself to be negatively affected by – the naysayers around him.
I don’t know about you, but I can learn a lot from Bobby Jones… and I’m not just talking about how to swing a club or drain a putt!
