I usually watch Fox & Friends while I am eating my breakfast in the morning, but last week I thought I would see how “the other side” is reporting the news. And so, I turned on MSNBC and watched the Morning Joe for a few minutes.
The segment I saw, which was narrated by meteorologist Al Roker, featured a wide assortment of natural disasters that have occurred over the past year including tornados, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and unprecedented heat waves. For instance, Phoenix AZ recorded more than 30 straight days of temperatures above 100, and Rio de Janeiro experienced an all-time high of 138 degrees.
Of course, MSNBC blamed these cataclysmic weather conditions on manmade climate change. Is the world’s climate changing? Absolutely, but then again, it has been changing every day and every year since Adam and Eve were banned from the Garden of Eden. I assume that the living conditions in the Garden were idyllic with mild temperatures, low humidity, and a gentle breeze. However, since man’s fall, all creation has been corrupted… and that includes our weather patterns.
Nowadays, animals kill and then devour each other, diseases run rampant, and hurricanes happen. That’s all part of living in a fallen and sin-stained world. As for whether man is responsible for El Ninos or La Ninas, I will leave that to people with a higher paygrade then me. However, I will say that paleoclimatologists believe that there was a Medieval Warm Period from 950-1250 AD when global temperatures rose precipitously… followed by a “Little Ice Age” when they dipped rather dramatically. Since both of these weather anomalies preceded the Industrial Age, I will let you draw your own conclusions.
The point I want to make today is the same one that Pastor Fischer made in the quote above. Whereas you and I have no control over today’s weather patterns let alone tomorrow’s, we can – and should – change the spiritual environment around us.
How? By living for God and obeying His Word, loving those around us (friends and foes alike), and pointing everyone we meet to Jesus.
