“God gives us visions on the mountain but leads us down to the valley to work them out.” – Os Hillman

Have you ever heard it said about someone that they are “so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good?” What that means is that some people deal entirely with the theoretical and forget about the practical.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I just delivered a sermon about the importance of being heavenly minded (see Colossians 3). And yes, Philippians 4:8 emphasizes a similar point. However, throughout his epistle, James reminds his readers that “faith without works is dead.” In other words, don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk.

Walking around with our head in the clouds may make us appear to be more spiritual than the next guy, but to me, how we apply the truth revealed and the lessons learned during life’s mountaintop experiences is where the rubber meets the road. If we never put that knowledge and those lessons to the test, what good are they?

And guess what? The best – in fact, the only – place to put these divine revelations into practice is in the valleys of life. If they can make it there… as Frank Sinatra used to sing in New York, New York… they can make it anywhere.

“The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Galatians 4:9 (NKJV)
