Stranded on a Desert Island with Nothing to Read

Have you ever asked yourself the following question: “If I were stranded on a desert island for an entire year… or 10 years… or the rest of my life… and I could only have one book with me, what book would I choose?”

If you picked any book other than the Bible, I think you should get your head examined!

As much as I love to read biographies about great men – I just finished reading one about Henry Clay and one about Thomas Jefferson before that – they don’t feed my soul. Neither do the books about sports figures or sporting events that I find so fascinating, like the one I am currently reading titled, A Terrible Splendor, about a Davis Cup tennis match in 1937 between America’s Don Budge and Germany’s Baron von Cramm.

These books entertain me and keep me mentally sharp, but they don’t stir my soul or make my spirit soar. Only the inspired and inerrant Word of God does that, which is why I read it every weekday morning and preach it every Sunday morning, too.

The Bible is a guidebook for life as well as a roadmap through it, helping us to maximize our journey while avoiding as many pitfalls and potholes as possible. It also points us to heaven and unlocks the door by introducing us to the One who loved us so much that He died in our place on Calvary’s cross.

Yes indeed, the Bible is God’s love letter to mankind and should be cherished above all other books or pieces of literature. It’s 66 books-in-1 may have been penned by man, but every word was inspired by the Holy Spirit Himself.

Ironically, almost every time I read the Bible, something new jumps off the page at me even though I may have read that passage hundreds of times before. That’s just one more reason why it would be the best companion you could ever have on a desert island… or in your own home… or wherever you have time to crack open a book for a quick (or extended) read.
