Sleeping In a Broom Closet

Monday, March 27, 2023

“The only cure for a guilty conscience is the sight of Jesus suffering on the cross.” – C.H. Spurgeon

My wife often kids me that I could sleep standing up in a broom closet. She also gets annoyed because I can usually drift off in a matter of minutes – sometimes seconds – when I go to bed, whereas she often has trouble falling asleep.

I suppose one reason is that, like most men, I am task-oriented. When I go to bed, my job is to go to sleep… and so I do. Mission accomplished!

Another reason is that I try my best to keep a clear conscience. That means confessing my sins “in real time” as they occur or shortly thereafter. And so, when I lay my head on my pillow at the end of the day, I don’t carry a lot of excess baggage with me.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There are still some nights where I toss and turn like everyone else, usually because something went wrong that day or I have an important meeting the next morning. But, as a rule, I sleep like a baby. Not because I am innocent, but because Jesus has pronounced me not guilty.

In a nutshell, my formula for a good night’s sleep is confessing my sins and counting my blessings… instead of counting sheep!

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (BSB)
