Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

“From every text in the Bible, there is a road to Jesus.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Remember the old “parlor game”, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? It was based on the 1929 short story, “Chains” by Frigyes Karinthy, and Stanley Milgram’s “small-world” experiment in the 1960s that suggested that through our social networks, we are all surprisingly interconnected. There was even a 1993 movie with a similar premise titled Six Degrees of Separation starring Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing, and Will Smith.

Well, it’s no parlor game, but a demonstrable fact that every text in the Bible eventually points to Jesus. Some directly and some indirectly, but they all arrive at the same place.

For example, our church is currently studying the Book of Ruth. Ruth is the daughter-in-law of Naomi who travels from Bethlehem (sound familiar) to Moab with her husband Elimelech and their two sons because of a famine in the land. While they are there, Elimelech and both sons die, leaving Naomi and her two daughters-in-law widows.

Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth return to Bethlehem while the other daughter-in-law Orpah remains in Moab. Once back in the Promised Land, Ruth encounters a close relative of Elimelech’s named Boaz, who becomes her kinsman-redeemer, a foreshadowing of the role Jesus plays in the life of sinners saved by His shed blood. Boaz and Ruth then marry and produce a son named Obed, who is the father of Jesse… the grandfather of David… and an ancestor of Jesus.

There’s no mention of Kevin Bacon in the Book of Ruth, but a lot of verses sure point to J-E-S-U-S!

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 (BSB)
