"We who are true Christians are called men of God. The soldier does not flee from battle. The fireman does not hide from flames. The pastor does not run from wolves. We move toward sacrifice and risk as Christ’s men. We are sons of the Most High God, husbands of his daughters, fathers of immortal souls, sojourners in enemy territory, men on mission with a mighty gospel. Let us not smother our lives with an effeminate love of ease. Palaces are no places for God’s sons when walls need building.” - Greg Morse of Desiring God

I don’t know Greg Morse, but I think he and I would be fast friends were we to meet. In fact, it seems like we are cut from the same cloth, “brothers from different mothers” as the saying goes.

You see, the sentiments that Greg expressed in today’s quote are exactly why I started Risk Takers for Christ back in 2011. Simply put, I saw entirely too many Christians – and Christian men, in particular – who were following the path of least resistance in life. They had their “fire insurance” (in other words, they were saved and on their way to heaven and not hell), but their focus was on living comfortable lives instead of eternally impactful ones.

My friend, we are on this earth for a very few precious years and will have all eternity to rest (and yes, work) in a perfect heavenly environment free from sin, conflict, and pain. However, until then, we are called to be salt and light in a dark and dying world (Matthew 5:13-16); not to coast our way through life on spiritual autopilot.

Remember how Jesus mocked and rebuked the “wicked and lazy” servant in Matthew 25 who buried his Master’s talents rather than investing them? I sure wouldn’t want to face Jesus on Judgment Day and have to explain why I wasted my 70 or 80 years on Planet Earth pursuing worldly pleasures instead of heavenly treasures.

Anything worthwhile takes effort and requires sacrifice, so resist the urge to glide into Glory devoid of battle scars. On the contrary, ask God to send you into the thick of the fight. There are souls at stake and God’s honor (and yours) is on the line. Be bold… be courageous… and do not quit until the battle is over and the war is won.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Ephesians 6:10 (NKJV)

- Rev. Dale M. Glading, President
