Nature Abhors a Vacuum

“In the absence of God, man becomes the determiner of things.” – Zach Dasher

Horror vacui is Latin for “horror of the vacuum”, a hypothesis originally attributed to Aristotle and later expressed by Spinoza as “nature abhors a vacuum”. The core of the hypothesis is that nature contains no vacuums because the denser materials surrounding them naturally and immediately fill the voids.

Well, my friend, the same goes for our culture, our society, our educational system, and pretty much every aspect of life. Once you remove God from the equation – as the secular humanists have been trying to do for centuries – the limited intellect and often faulty reasoning of man rush to occupy that vacant space.

Sadly, we have witnessed first-hand what happens when you tell God to take a back seat in America or kick Him to the curb entirely, such as when the Supreme Court outlawed prayer and Bible reading in our public schools. Murder, crime, and incarceration rates soared… lax sexual standards led to infidelity and promiscuity while STDs spiked and marriages crumbled… and a hedonistic lifestyle resulted in rampant drug use.

Perhaps worst of all, the lack of a sense of God-given purpose led to a massive increase in the number of people suffering from depression or contemplating/committing suicide. It’s a simple lesson in physics: if you remove God, Satan will seek to fill – I should say flood – the gap left behind.

In his arrogance and pride, man thinks he has all the answers; but in reality, he has very few of them. It is only when he submits and surrenders his will to God’s that the light of truth begins to break through the spiritual and mental fog that envelopes man in his fallen state.

Left to his own designs, man is helpless and hopeless. But add God to the mix and “all heaven breaks loose” as man is finally able to achieve his God-given potential.

“I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (BSB)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
