My Little Ol' Pea Brain

“I stand for what the Bible states and will until the day I die.” – Bob Williamson
I feel sorry for people whose pride prevents them from accepting God’s Word at face value. One such man was Thomas Jefferson, whose intellect was so great that he refused to believe what he could not demonstrably prove. As a result, he reportedly used a pair of scissors to cut out the parts of the Bible that described the miracles of Jesus as well as Noah and the Great Flood, Jonah and the great fish, etc. However, despite his doubts, Jefferson faithfully attended the largest church in the country during his presidency. Ironically, those services were held in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
Another man that I know once questioned the inerrancy of Scripture during a church committee meeting. When another committee member asked him what gave him the right to embrace some parts of the Bible while rejecting others, he simply pointed at his head and said, “It’s on my shoulders.” In other words, this misguided man thought his intelligence trumped God’s. How arrogant!
At Midway Bible Fellowship, I have been preaching through the Gospel of Mark for the past year and am only in Chapter 10. One of the themes that Christ repeats (see Mark 9:36-37; and Mark 10:13-16) is that we must come to Him with childlike faith. That means accepting by faith those things we don’t fully understand. After all, if we – with our limited intellect – could completely comprehend God in all His majesty, glory, and complexity, He wouldn’t be so great, now would He?
On the contrary, I take great comfort in the fact that God is larger than my little ol’ pea brain. And quite frankly, I pity those folks who think they can outsmart Him.
“Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: ‘Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.” Job 40:6-7 (NKJV)
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)
