Mission Impossible

“We are secure, not because we hold tightly to Jesus, but because He holds tightly to us.” – R.C. Sproul

There have been six Mission Impossible movies, all of them starring Tom Cruise as super spy Ethan Hunt. Supposedly, two more are in production, with Dead Reckoning – Part One due to be released in July 2023 and Dead Reckoning – Part Two scheduled for a June 2024 release.

The Jason Bourne movie series began with The Bourne Identity in 2002, and four sequels have been produced (so far) through 2016. All five films feature Matt Damon in the title role based on a character created by author Robert Ludlum.

If you have seen one of the above movies – or any action film for that matter – they are sure to include a scene where the hero is found daggling from a cliff, a ledge, or a moving train. Somehow, someway, Ethan Hunt and Jason Bourne defy the odds… and the law of gravity… by hanging on by their fingernails.

In real life, you or I would simply plunge to our death, not being able to cling to the cliff indefinitely, let alone pull ourselves back up by our knuckles. Truth be told, no one can, but that doesn’t stop Hollywood from creating action heroes who transcend human limitations.

Whereas fictional characters like Ethan Hunt and Jason Bourne are relatively harmless, it would be extremely dangerous to depend on our own physical and spiritual strength to cling to everlasting life. At some point, our stamina would give out and down, down, down we would go.

Praise God that my salvation – and yours – doesn’t depend on our own muscle or merits!

“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” John 10:28 (NKJV)

“While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.” John 17:12 (NKJV)
