Lily-livered Laodiceans

“Anything is better than the dead calm of indifference.” – C.H. Spurgeon

In my experience as a layman, a missionary, and a pastor, I have noticed one trait that far too many Christians have in common. Let’s call the day they trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior, Point A. Likewise, let’s call the day that God calls them home – or Jesus returns for His bride – Point B.

Tragically, a lot of present-day believers simply want to travel from Point A to Point B in the most convenient and comfortable fashion possible. They prefer to make that journey “under the radar” lest they ruffle Satan’s feathers or step on other people’s toes. And so, they go through life trying their best not to make any spiritual waves.

Well, guess what? Jesus was a world-class wave maker! If you don’t believe me, just ask the Pharisees, whom Jesus called fools, hypocrites, blind guides, and whitewashed tombs (see Matthew 23). Or consult the moneychangers in the temple, who felt the brunt of Jesus’s whip as He overturned their tables (see John 2).

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather be a world changer like the early disciples (see Acts 17:6) than a lukewarm Laodicean, even if it costs me my life. After all, those lily-livered Laodiceans made Jesus so sick to His stomach that He threatened to vomit them out of His mouth (see Revelation 3).

Christianity is NOT for fence-sitters or the faint-hearted!

“But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, ‘These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.’” Acts 17:6 (NKJV)
