Life Is Not a Spectator Sport

"What is life but education, anyway?"– Henry Ford
I sincerely doubt that Henry Ford was referring to formal education in today’s quote. After all, the inventor of the Model T and the Model A only had an 8th grade education.
I am more inclined to believe that Mr. Ford was talking about real-life experience. In other words, the invaluable lessons we learn as we navigate our 60, 70, or 80 years on this planet. Some of those lessons come rather easily whereas others are learned while attending the “school of hard knocks.”
Thinking that we know it all at any age is a foolish proposition. So is neglecting to expand our mind – and our horizons – as we age. Far too many seniors put their lives on autopilot when they retire or hit a certain age. Why not read a new book… learn a new language… or pick up a new hobby? How about taking a class at the local community college or writing your memoirs?
Life is not a spectator sport. On the contrary, it is to be experienced to the fullest extent possible. I guess that’s why, at the ripe old age of 63, I still prefer to play sports instead of simply watching them.
There are always new lessons to learn and better yet, new ways in which to serve God and minister to others. My friend, let’s commit to doing both.
“And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.” Joshua 14:10-11 (NKJV)
