Julia Roberts & Lyle Lovett

“The more unworthy you feel yourself to be, the more evidence you have that nothing but unspeakable love could have led the Lord Jesus to save a soul like yours.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Have you ever met a “him/her” couple? By that I mean that, on the surface, one person is physically attractive and the other one is rather plain looking. For instance, a lot of people scratched their heads when Julia Roberts – who has been named People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman in the World a record five times – married country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993, just three weeks after they began dating. Sadly, their marriage only lasted two years but it seems that they have managed to remain friends.

Well, my friend, I don’t know about you, but when I look in the mirror, I see a gray-haired grandfather with more than a few wrinkles. Looking deeper into my soul, I see a man who loves God, but fails Him daily.

And so, instead of asking what redeeming characteristics Julia Roberts found attractive in Lyle Lovett, I prefer to ask why God would send His only Son to earth to die for my sins? What could He have possible found attractive – or worth saving – in me?

But He did… and I am content to rest in that irrefutable fact. As Charles Spurgeon once said, “Despite the whispers of Satan and the doubts of your own heart, you are greatly loved.”

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (NKJV)

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” I John 3:1 (NKJV)

“We love Him because He first loved us.” I John 4:19 (NKJV)
