How Did God Wire YOU?

“Do not depend on your own ingenuity to bring people to God. Continue to help others experience Him by revealing His presence in and through you.” – Os Hillman

A few years ago, I was visiting an old friend and former boss in New Jersey when his older brother came into the room. He was the man who had first hired me as a 23-year-old fresh out of college and within five weeks, had promoted me to the position of department head.

I rose to my feet, greeted him warmly, and then thanked him sincerely and profusely for giving me my first big break. “It was my pleasure,” he replied. “I could see very early on that you had a lot of creativity.”

For whatever reason, that is the way God wired me. I love coming up with new ideas – under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit – such as starting America’s first-ever athletic prison ministry or beginning a birthday card program for inmates. I also enjoyed the challenge of running for Congress as an evangelical underdog in a heavily Democrat district and relocating to Florida to launch a new ministry at age 51.

How has God wired you, my friend? Has He given you, like He did me, the spiritual gifts of administration (I Corinthians 12:28) and exhortation (Romans 12:8)? If so, utilize them to their fullest extent for His glory. Or maybe He has equipped and empowered you to be a teacher or a leader of some sort. Then do those jobs and fulfill those roles for Jesus. The gifts of service, giving, or mercy? Use them for God’s glory as well.

But be sure to remember that God – and God alone – is the source of your creativity, giftedness, and spiritual power… not you.

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.” Luke 12:48 (BSB)
