God's Marching Orders Are to Be Obeyed, Not Questioned

“We are not true to our profession of being Christians if we question the summons of our Leader and Commander.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Can you imagine a soldier in the field openly questioning the orders of his or her commander? Such insolence and insubordination would rightfully result in severe discipline including time spent in the brig or stockade and a possible court martial. And if the mutiny occurred in the midst of battle, history is full of examples of men being shot as traitors in order to maintain discipline.
The same goes for parents and children (not the shooting part!) When our kids are young, a simple “because I said so” is usually all it takes for them to comply. When they get a little older, we may offer a brief explanation of the rules and the reasons behind them, but a parent should never abdicate their authority in the home.
But Dale, what if the commanding officer or the parent is ordering the soldier or the child to do something illegal or immoral. Then what? Great question… and I’m glad you asked! Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and the ones I just mentioned would fit that category.
However, as Christians, Jesus Christ is our “Leader and Commander” as Charles Spurgeon puts it… and He would never order us to do something wrong. On the contrary, our Heavenly Commander-in-Chief is completely perfect, holy, and righteous, which means that He is incapable of issuing an incorrect order.
And so, my friend, when Jesus tells you to do something, there is only one acceptable response and that is “YES, SIR!” and YES, LORD!”
“Who is this King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8 (BSB)
“But Samuel declared: ‘Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams.’” I Samuel 15:22 (BSB)
“And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.” I Samuel 17:47 (BSB)
