False Humility Is... False

Last week, our son and daughter-in-law treated Deanna and me to a delicious dinner at one of Vero Beach’s nicest restaurants. The food was incredible, and the company was even better.
As we were waiting to be seated, we chatted with another couple who are friends and supporters of our ministry. They also receive my daily political blog, which addresses current events from a faith-based perspective.
After commenting on a few of my most recent articles, the wife said, “You know, you are a very good writer.”
My reply was simple, but direct. More importantly, it was also honest. “Thank you,” I said. “God has gifted me with the ability to write and so, I want to use that ability to glorify Him as best I can.”
It may have been easier to refute her compliment, but I have had enough people praise my God-given writing ability over the years to realize that it is a gift from above. And so, instead of replying with a sense of false humility, I simply gave the credit to God. Doing otherwise would not only be dishonest, but also dishonoring to God who gave me that gift and expects me to use it.
My friend, God doesn’t want you and me to hide our gifts or to downplay them. On the contrary, He desires us to use them fully and frequently for His glory. To me, not utilizing your God-given talents is as bad as taking credit for them yourself.
