Drug Dealers and Gangbangers

“There should be no one with whom we converse so much as with Jesus.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Working from a home office, I get to interact with Deanna throughout the day when she isn’t babysitting one of our precious grandkids. I also have a standing breakfast appointment on Tuesday mornings with three close Christian friends where we share prayer concerns, our views on world affairs, or just “chew the fat”.
But every day, bar none, starts with some precious one-on-one time with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In fact, I can’t imagine beginning a day without some time alone in prayer and meditating on His Word (although I’ll admit I usually cut back a bit on weekends).
The point remains, however, that time spent with Jesus should be our #1 daily priority. As I often tell the young men who attend our Living H2O Initiative, a weekly basketball program for at-risk youth, show me the five people you spend the most time with and I’ll show you your future.
In other words, if you hang around gangbangers and drug dealers, chances are you’ll wind up behind bars someday. Conversely, if your best friends are devout Christians, the odds are that they will have a positive influence on your life.
Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers”, put it this way…
“To remain in Him alone, this is true love; but to commune with the world, to find sufficient satisfaction in our earthly comforts, to even prefer the company of our fellow Christians to secret fellowship with Him, this grieves our jealous Lord. He longs to have us abide in Him and enjoy constant fellowship with Himself; and many of the trials that He sends us are for the purpose of weaning our hearts from created things and fixing them more closely on Him who created everything.”
“May we have grace today to keep our hearts in holy purity for Christ alone, with sacred jealousy closing our eyes to all the fascinations of the world!”

“One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: ‘Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?’ Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22:35-38 (BSB)
