Don't Be a Sin Snooper

“A Christian is known not only by what he believes or affirms, but also by what he rejects and denies.” – R.C. Sproul

I received a text from a young man in New Jersey the other day who is active politically and for whatever reason, looks to me for my opinion and insights. He was too young to vote for me when I ran for Congress back in 2008 and 2010, but he still remembers my two campaigns and my strong conservative platform.

In any case, his recent text was about the pastor of the church he used to attend… and it wasn’t very complimentary. According to him, the previous pastor was true to God’s Word, but his replacement has deviated far from it. Case in point: the new pastor recently attended a political demonstration wearing a gay pride shirt.

My friend, it is one thing to be loving and gracious towards those who are involved in the homosexual lifestyle. However, celebrating their sin is not something that a Christian should do.

Remember that when Jesus refused to condemn the woman caught in adultery in John 8, He also told her to “Go and sin no more.” In other words, whereas He offered her grace, He also called her actions sinful… and told her to stop engaging in them.

Of course, Jesus was sinless – and we are not – and so, before we counsel or confront someone about their sinful behavior, we must first take a long look in the mirror ourselves, being sure to remove the plank in our own eye before helping to remove the speck in theirs (Matthew 7:1-5).

Christians are not called to be “sin snoopers”, always looking for people to criticize and condemn. After all, when you point a finger at someone else, four fingers are pointing back at you. However, that doesn’t mean that we should sit idly by while our society goes to “hell in a handbasket”. On the contrary, we are called to be salt (a preservative) and light (which exposes darkness) by none other than Jesus Himself (see Matthew 5:13-16).

God forbid that we should openly engage in sin or enable others to do likewise.

“Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Ephesians 5:11 (BSB)
