“The elect church is the favorite of heaven, the treasure of Christ, the crown of His head, the bracelet of His arm, the breastplate of His heart, the very center and core of His love.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Are you ready for some very alarming – and dare I say “depressing” – statistics?

Nearly 85% of Americans suffer from low self-esteem. Among the leading “confidence killers” are body image issues, skin issues, and social media pressures.

Between 19% and 29% of U.S. adults (depending on the source) have been diagnosed with clinical depression during their lifetime with 13% experiencing active symptoms. That is a significant increase over the past 20 years with a dramatic spike since 2015, possibly due to the Covid pandemic. Gallup reports that 48 million Americans are currently being treated for depression.

The global antidepressant market was valued at $20 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $37 billion by 2032. In the U.S. alone, Medicaid expenditures on antidepressants exceeded $1.12 billion in 2021, and the broader economic burden of treating major depressive disorder in the U.S. is estimated to be $92.7 billion per year.

How tragic and yes, how downright depressing!

So, is there a nonpharmaceutical antidote for depression and low self-esteem or are we all destined to spend the rest of our lives popping pills between visits to the psychiatrist’s office?

Well, here are some scriptural salves and biblical balms that just might help you feel better about yourself…

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’” Genesis 1:26a (NKJV) That verse means that you and I were created in the very image of God Himself!

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” I John 3:1 (NKJV) That verse declares that when we trust Jesus as our Savior, we become God’s adopted children!

“And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…” Romans 8:17a (BSB) That verse states that born again believers are joint heirs with Jesus and have an eternal inheritance awaiting us in heaven!

Are you feeling better about yourself now?
