Disneyland Is NOT the Happiest Place on Earth

Since it opened its doors on July 17, 1955, Disneyland in Anaheim, CA has been referred to as “The Happiest Place on Earth”. According to Copilot Search, Disneyland is “known for its magical attractions, immersive experiences, and family-friendly environment.” As a result, “Disneyland has long been marketed as a destination where joy and wonder are guaranteed. Visitors often cite the park’s attention to detail, entertainment, and nostalgic charm as key contributors to its reputation for happiness.”

Walt Disney, the visionary behind Disneyland, would be very happy to hear that description.

Outside of the Magic Kingdom, Finland tops the list as the happiest country in the world for the 9th consecutive year, with an average life evaluation score of 7.764 out of 10. Factors contributing to Finland’s high happiness include strong social support, high life expectancy, personal freedom, and a cultural emphasis on balance and resilience, such as daily outdoor activities and the tradition of sauna.

Other countries receiving high “happiness marks” include Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. As for individual cities, Copenhagen in Denmark and Kyoto in Japan are known for “fostering joy”. Copenhagen is celebrated for its vibrant culture, bike-friendly streets, green spaces, and the Danish concept of hygge, which emphasizes coziness, togetherness, and well-being. Meanwhile, people living in Kyoto say it offers serene natural landscapes, historic temples, and a sense of balance that can enhance personal happiness.

But truth be told, happiness is a very transient emotion. It can be here one moment and gone the next. One minute you’re riding high… and the next you’ve been laid off from your job, received a bad pathology report from your doctor, or been dumped by your spouse.

Suddenly, that ever-present smile is gone from your face and replaced by a frown and tears streaking down your cheeks.

True joy is much, much different. It doesn’t depend on circumstances and so, it doesn’t change when things go well or things go wrong. As Os Hillman accurately stated in today’s quote, the amount of joy you experience is determined by the amount of God you experience. And because He never changes, the joy that comes from Him doesn’t either.

The real Happiest Place on Earth is in the heart of a true believer!
