Care for a Cappuccino?

“I am content to live and to die as the mere repeater of Scriptural teaching.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Bells, whistles, and all the latest Christian (and non-Christian) fads. Coffee shops serving lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos. And what’s a worship team without strobe lights, dry ice, and laser shows?
They’re all part and parcel of American Christianity today, at least in the megachurches that dot the landscape from sea to shing sea.
But are they really necessary? Perhaps a better question is: are they even helpful, edifying, and Christ-honoring?
Now don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a good cup of coffee as much as the next guy, but it’s not why I go to church. Nor do I attend worship services every Sunday morning (even before I was a pastor) to be coddled and/or entertained.
On the contrary, I go to worship the One True Living God, and to draw closer to Him by studying His Word and fellowshipping with His people. I don’t need any bells and whistles and frankly, I don’t want them. They just get in the way.
Just give me plain, unadulterated worship and in-depth Bible study with a personal application at the end to prepare me for the week ahead… and I am good to go. And so, that’s exactly what I try to offer our people at Midway Bible Church each and every Sunday morning.
Sure, we have a table with coffee and donuts to facilitate fellowship before and after the service along with a free Christian literature display to encourage people in their daily walk, but the heart of our church is God’s Word. Period… and end of story.
We just finished the Book of Exodus, are currently studying Ruth, and will be taking a “deep dive” into Peter’s Epistles next. That is the “meat and potatoes” I feed my congregation from the pulpit, with no exceptions.
After all, as Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 1:9, “There is nothing new under the sun.”
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” John 17:17 (BSB)
