Bug-Eyed in Bewilderment

“Angels are gazing on Him—His redeemed must not turn their eyes away from Him.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Whether it is your first girlfriend, your first car, or your first child, there are some things in life that you can’t stop staring at. Try as you might, you just can’t take your eyes off that girl, that car, or that baby. Their beauty leaves you bug-eyed in bewilderment… and you simply cannot look away.
I felt that way when I first laid eyes on my wife Deanna at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Needmore PA in June 1984. I can even tell you exactly where she was sitting in the church and exactly what she was wearing. Best of all, she has only gotten more beautiful with each passing year (what a blessed man I am!)
Likewise, when I first saw and held Bethany, Matthew, and Christopher mere seconds after their births, I was floating on air as I gazed at their little faces. Now, I experience that same warm and fuzzy feeling whenever I see our six precious grandkids, who are the absolute apples of their Papa’s eye.
Nature can do that to you, too. I still remember the awe I felt seeing Niagara Falls for the first time… and the breathtaking scenery I experienced in Banff, Canada on a recent trip. Mere words cannot describe the wonders of God’s creation.
However, ask yourself this question: if God’s creation can take your breath away, imagine what it will be like seeing Jesus face to face. Revelation 1:14-16 describes Him as follows…
“The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a blazing fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters. He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp double-edged sword came from His mouth. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.”
Got goosebumps yet?
After we stare at Jesus for the first 1,000 years or so, we may finally get around to seeing the rest of heaven that includes walls built of the finest gemstones, gates comprised of a single pearl, and of course, those fabulous streets of translucent gold.
I’m all packed and ready to go!
“But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’” I Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)
