A Majority of Fools

“Sometimes the ‘majority’ only means that all the fools are on the same side.” – Bob Williamson

Our Founding Fathers were brilliant! In setting up our country as a constitutional republic instead of a democracy, they ensured that the majority could not impose its will unilaterally on the minority. That is why we have an Electoral College that decides presidential races instead of a straight popular vote. It is also why each state – from the smallest (Rhode Island) to the largest (Alaska) and from the least populous (Wyoming) to the most populous (California) – gets the same number of senators: two.

The Bible is full of examples of the majority heading down the wrong path while a small but faithful minority remained steadfast in its allegiance to God. Remember there were 10 spies who returned from the Promised Land and – having seen giants – were too afraid to proceed. Meanwhile, two courageous spies (Joshua and Caleb) took God at His word. As a result, the 10 cowardly spies and everyone who believed them died in the wilderness whereas Joshua and Caleb got to lead the Israelites into the land “flowing with milk and honey”.

Likewise, the masses who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday with shouts of “Hosannah” were the same ones who cried out “Crucify Him” on Good Friday. But His small band of disciples multiplied after the resurrection and soon were accused (correctly) of “turning the world upside down” (see Acts 17:6).

My friend, don’t despair if you find yourself in the minority. This world is not our home and therefore, many of its values are not ours either (see Hebrews 13:14; Philippians 3:17-21; and I John 2:15-17).

Remember, you and God make a majority… and an unbeatable one at that!

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 (BSB)
