A Hermit, a Monk, and a Robot

“It is the incessant turmoil of the world, the constant attraction of earthly things, that takes the soul away from Christ.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Ouch… that one hit close to home, Charles Spurgeon. They don’t call you the “Prince of Preachers” for nothing!

Two of the things that I spend too much doing – at least according to Deanna, who is almost always right – are watching FOX News and shopping on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. The former is rather necessary because it keeps me informed as to the issues of the day which, in turn, gives me material for my political blog. At least that’s my excuse.

The latter is something I enjoy doing because I love antiques and sports memorabilia. The only problem is that when something that attracts my attention is featured… and it’s available locally at a reasonable price… it’s hard not to bid on it. And so, I sometimes accumulate more than what can conveniently fit into a 34-foot trailer, which is what we call home.

I wonder what would happen if I spent less time watching the news, less time browsing on Facebook, and more time praying, witnessing, or reading the Bible? Hmmm… I think we all know the answer to that!

Most likely, I would be less stressed and more in tune with the Holy Spirit. I’d also have a little more pocket change!

How about you, my friend? Are there some things that distract you from God, and from spending quality and quantity time with Him? If so – and we both know there are – would you be willing to limit (or even eliminate) them from your life?

I’m not advocating becoming a hermit, a monk, or a robot. After all, we are mere flesh and blood, which means that sinless perfection is not achievable in this life. But maybe, just maybe, we can exercise a little more self-discipline so that we become a little more Christlike every day.

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (ESV)

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.” Luke 12:48 (BSB)
